About the artist
Sonja Holmberg is an arts educator and watercolorist who grew up in a small town in Western Massachusetts. In 2021, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education (GSE), specializing in visual arts education. For her undergraduate years, she attended Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, receiving a triple major in Studio Art, English, and French.
As an artist, Sonja works almost exclusively in watercolor, often painting landscapes, buildings, and places that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Her Americana series, a body of work that she has been developing for several years, features diners, motels, gas stations, and other iconic roadside locales. Sonja is drawn to watercolor for its versatility, using both loose, translucent washes and the dry-brush technique to capture fine details.
Sonja is passionate about teaching and has frequently incorporated graphic novels into her lesson plans to promote her students’ enthusiasm for reading and the arts. She currently teaches Studio Art and English at Brooks School in North Andover, MA, where she lives with her husband, Max, their son, Glen, and their Border Heeler, Scout. During her free time, she loves running, reading, and visiting art museums and galleries.
